變量柱塞泵的壓力油經(jīng)泵體、泵殼變量殼體中的通油孔通過單向閥進(jìn)入變量殼體的下腔，當(dāng)拉桿向下運(yùn)動時，推動伺服活塞向下移動，伺服閥的上閥口打開，變量殼體下腔的壓力油經(jīng)變量活塞中的通油孔進(jìn)入變量殼體上腔，由于上腔面積大于下腔，液壓力推動活塞向下運(yùn)動，帶動銷軸使變量頭繞鋼球中心旋轉(zhuǎn)，改變變量頭的傾斜角（增大），柱塞泵的流量隨之增大。反之拉桿向上運(yùn)動，變量頭的傾斜角向相反方向變化，泵的流量也隨之變化。當(dāng)傾斜角度變至零以后，則變量頭向負(fù)偏角方向變化，液流生產(chǎn)換向，泵的進(jìn)出油口變換。

當(dāng)電動機(jī)帶動傳動軸旋轉(zhuǎn)時，泵缸與柱塞一同旋轉(zhuǎn)，柱塞頭與斜盤保持接觸，斜盤與缸體成一角度，斜盤不轉(zhuǎn)。當(dāng)缸體旋轉(zhuǎn)時，由于斜盤的斜面作用，柱塞就會在泵缸中做往復(fù)運(yùn)動。當(dāng)柱塞轉(zhuǎn)到斜盤低點，柱塞缸容積逐漸增大，因此液體經(jīng)配油盤的吸油口吸人油缸；而當(dāng)柱塞轉(zhuǎn)到斜盤高點，柱塞缸容積逐漸減小，油缸內(nèi)液體經(jīng)配油盤的出口排出液體。只要傳動軸不斷旋轉(zhuǎn)，液體就會不斷地被吸入和排出。
改變斜盤的角度，就可以改變柱塞在泵缸內(nèi)的行程長度，即可改變泵的流量。傾斜角度固定的稱為定量泵，傾斜角度可以改變的便稱為變量泵。
